An increased awareness of the potential of AI is leading many companies and organisations to adopt this technology in their business, from manufacturing to customer care. In Italy, there are seven key areas in which AI can express is full potential:

  • Industry and manufacturing: the latest generation of industrial robots would lead to increased productivity and higher quality by reducing errors, decrease accidents at work and enable preventive repair and maintenance of machinery.
  • Food indutry: thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), there are applications for all stages of the supply chain, from production to consumption, such as sensors in the field and on machinery, drones, sensors for quality control, smart labels, sensors for waste reduction and much more.
  • Culture and tourism: developments in the field of robotics have helped to simplify the mapping and digitisation of our cultural heritage, while augmented reality has found various applications in the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage, as well as in the museum experience.
  • Healthcare: both in research and clinical practice (surgery, patient care, …), modern technologies are revolutionising the world of medical care.
  • Environment, infrastructure and networks: AI enables the monitoring of natural resource use, reduces emissions, prevents natural disasters and increases the efficiency of infrastructure by preventing breakdowns and interruptions.
  • Smart cities: the analysis of geolocalisation data and data provided by sensors can optimise the supply and/or demand of public services (e.g. smart parking, public transport, lighting, etc.), helping to improve citizens' lives in terms of safety and well-being and reducing costs.
  • Public administration: the use of AI in customer services and call centres speeds up procedures and improves the user experience.

Looking at the numerous uses of this technology and the continuous developments, it is now essential to invest in the training of one's workforce and to rely on specialised and competent people to stay up-to-date and exploit the full potential.
